Ravens Film Study·
Flowers has quickly become the engine of Baltimore’s passing game, and it is hard to imagine this offense without him at this point.
He may not fit the traditional mold of a big bodied WR1, but the production and impact are tough to argue against. Flowers consistently creates separation, gets open in key moments, and gives Lamar Jackson a reliable target who can turn a short gain into a huge play in an instant. What really makes Flowers special is how effortless he looks changing direction. Defenders can know what is coming and still struggle to stop it. His ability to plant, explode, and separate on crossing routes and intermediate concepts makes him one of the toughest covers in football. Baltimore has leaned into that skill set, and it has paid off in a big way. When Lamar extends plays, Flowers becomes even harder to defend because he just keeps finding open space. Once the ball is in his hands, that is where things really get fun. Flowers has become one of the better yards after catch receivers in the league because of how slippery he is in space. He forces missed tackles, makes defenders look silly at times, and always feels like he is one move away from breaking a big play. There were even comparisons made to Barry Sanders in terms of how elusive he can look with the ball in his hands. That ability to create after the catch is a huge reason why he has become such an important piece of the offense. The numbers back up the eye test too. Flowers was among the league leaders in efficiency metrics like yards per route run, and he did it without seeing the same volume of targets as some of the NFL’s top receivers. He consistently made the most out of his opportunities and proved he can produce at a high level even in an offense that still leans heavily on the run game. Despite his size, he also held his own in contested catch situations better than many would expect. That said, there is still another level he could reach. One area for growth is becoming more of a true vertical threat. He has shown flashes of tracking the ball deep and getting behind defenders, but there is a feeling that Baltimore can unlock even more by expanding how they use him. Moving him around the formation more, mixing in outside alignments, and letting him attack defenses in different ways could make him even tougher to game plan for. The biggest thing Flowers still needs to clean up is ball security. There were moments where trying to squeeze out every extra yard led to some costly mistakes, whether it was fumbles or extending the ball in risky situations. But at the same time, that fearless and competitive mentality is part of what makes him such an electric player. If he can tighten up those small details while keeping the same play style, the ceiling gets even higher. At the end of the day, the expectation is pretty simple. Zay Flowers is Baltimore’s guy in the passing game, and the offense is better when the ball is finding its way into his hands. He has already proven he can be a difference maker, and if he keeps developing, it feels more like a question of when, not if, Baltimore rewards him with a long term extension.
