The most alarming statistic of the day was that Wayne (40) had as many offensive snaps as tight ends Foster Moreau (23), Cade Stover (8),
and Marlin Klein (9) combined. It was mind-boggling that the tight ends weren’t used more. It contradicts everything the organization has done, what we have seen, and basic common sense. The incompetence was laughable. Dalton Schultz had an impressive day statistically, but if Schultz is ever your most productive receiver, then you likely weren’t very good on offense. Defenses will live with that production from Schultz.
Schultz consistently played in 11 personnel in this game, but he only played on one of 15 snaps out of 12 personnel, with Moreau and Cade Stover being the typical pair of players. Even in 13 personnel, which the Texans used 12 times after barely deploying it last season, half the time it was Moreau, Stover and Klein as the three on the field. Schultz’s route participation rate in this game was similar to last season, as was his targets per route. But it wouldn’t be surprising if the Texans use more 12 and 13 personnel in games where they are ahead, which would mean less playing time for Schultz. It’s also likely that Klein sees more playing time as the season progresses, although that could be at the expense of Moreau or Stover instead of Schultz.
