Drops were a problem over both joint practice days with the Eagles, and not just by one or two players.
The touchdown to Fannin was Gabriel’s only completion of Thursday’s shortened practice. On the following play, Gabriel threw a perfect pass over the middle to Diontae Johnson. But Johnson bobbled it, and it ended up as an interception. Johnson’s opportunities with the starters have been limited and rather forgettable. Finding at least one external upgrade at wide receiver has to be a priority, even if the Browns’ decision-makers believe undrafted rookie Gage Larvadain should make the 53-man roster.

Tommy Rees on WR Diontae Johnson: “I think for Tay, it was, ‘Hey, get back.’ We gotta get back into playing in shape, get back in the playbook. And every day he’s been here, the comfort level seems to grow, and his relationship with the quarterbacks and the players seem to grow. And look, when you rep as many guys as you do, sometimes you lose the timing that you build the rapport of, so all those reps, all those throws, are valuable for us right now, and Tay has certainly done a nice job.”
