In his fourth year, Young is on his fourth offensive play caller.
During his rookie season he had Frank Reich, then Thomas Brown, then Reich, then Brown again in his ear. The past two years, head coach Dave Canales has called the plays. And this past offseason, Canales handed the play-calling reins to OC Brad Idzik, his longtime coaching partner dating to their days in Seattle in 2019. If you’ve watched the Panthers the last few years — be honest, have you? — you would see Young taking far more shots down the field. He has a quick release and good arm strength, so Idzik has also tapped into those assets. Young not always needing a clean base from which to throw can disrupt the defense’s timing when it comes to pass-rush lanes and coverage. And when he gets on the move, he buys more time with his legs and finds different throwing angles. Carolina has installed some shotgun keeper stuff that Young has excelled at.
