He’s clearly the third tight end, and his playing time will be dependent on how often the Bears want to jump into 13 personnel and how many
times they will fold him into 12-personnel formations. Durham Smythe was the third tight end last season and got 293 snaps (25. 4%). If everyone is healthy, it’s a little difficult to envision Roush, a third-round pick, exceeding that, but who knows? Remember, Ben Johnson has a bevy of wide receivers he can deploy, too, so it’s not as if the Bears are going to feel pigeonholed into going with big personnel because they lack great options on the outside. Because Roush is a Stanford product, he’s really sharp, and that’s going to help him assimilate into the offense. There’s a reason NFL teams like drafting players, especially tight ends, from Stanford. They know they’re getting bright guys. As Cole Kmet (Notre Dame) mentioned earlier in camp, the Bears have a smart tight end room with Colston Loveland (Michigan), Roush and Stephen Carlson (Princeton). I should mention that tight ends coach Jim Dray played his college ball at Stanford as well.
